The Little Mermaid 2023 — Review/Reaction

Big Ursula! An Aqua-fun time! This modern adaption of the classic animated film takes audiences along a journey with Ariel that is more adventure oriented and action packed than before. Halle Bailey and Melissa McCarthy embody the elements of the original characters while also giving them their own unique twists. Ariel is an explorer in this movie, and the bright color scheme of the ocean and its creatures make you feel as if you are swimming in the open blue with her. Although some elements were slightly hard to grasp with the realism of underwater activity, the movie certainly still captures the feel you would expect from an Atlantis Sea like setting.

Pros

The beautiful ocean cinematography and colors. Halle Bailey as Ariel, Melissa McCarthy as Ursula, and surprisingly I really enjoyed Jessica Alexander as the Vanessa version of Ursula. The opening shot of the waves, the great white shark scene, the various colorful musical numbers, and of course big Ursula (which was so terrifying and gorgeous), were such breathtaking moments of cinematography that were fun and truly made for an enjoyable watch. Halle Bailey is so playful and vibrant, her sense of approachability and charisma give Ariel the passionate vibe of an underwater explorer and not so much a Disney princess searching for love. I was skeptical from the original marketing of the movie about how Melissa would portray Ursula, and I can confidently say she truly made this character into her own, with quick wit and darkness that exemplifies her version as the witch of the sea. Jessica Alexander wasn’t on screen for very long, and sure made use of every second. She was so expressive, paralleling the physical facial features of the original animated character.

Cons

Awkwafina as Scuttle was a little overbearing and distracting, especially considering it was a bird that could stay underwater with no problem breathing in this movie. That could be to highlight Ariel’s first emergence from the water, however it was the unrealistic aspect that was still distracting. As a fan of the original I was also just a little disappointed some of the visuals in the original Poor Unfortunate Souls number were missing like the mermaids that Ursula shows from the cauldron as she sings about them. However it was made up for by other creepy cool elements like the skulls Ursula holds with her tentacles and the large purple and green storm that swirls around her and Ariel as she brews the spell.

Where Can You Watch The Little Mermaid?

Only in theaters! As of right now the film is only being shown on the big screen, so you will have to reserve a seat to see it in person to experience all the movie has to offer! You can purchase a ticket from Fandango to find your local showtimes. I’d highly recommend seeing the film in DBOX-3D like myself to truly experience the underwater elements that immerse you into the world of the deep blue sea with the talented and beautiful Halle Bailey as Ariel, and the witty and dark Melissa McCarthy as Ursula in this 2023 adaption of The Little Mermaid!
