Winona Ryder Seen In Lydia Deetz Costume
In the new era of appreciated pop-culture nostalgia, a Beetlejuice remake has been long overdue, 35 years to be exact. With years of discussions towards a sequel, the story’s continuation was confirmed at the 2023 CinemaCon Panel, where a sizzle reel revealed the project’s development. Combined with some new stills of Winona Ryder on set, fans are being treated to the modern version of her character, Lydia Deetz, which shows us that she is still rocking her iconic black spiked hair.
The photos come from the Beetlejuice 2 set in London, where Winona Ryder is seen filming in a Tesla outside an older academic institution, accompanied by a male driver. As filming only began May 10th, the cast and crew are hard at work, clearly indicated by the revival of Lydia’s classic gothic look which parallels her style in the original film. There are over 10 set photos available to look at from the Daily Mail, including the few shots seen below.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, “Jenna Ortega is leading the cast with Michael Keaton reprising his role as the obnoxious ghost. Winona Ryder is also back, playing Ortega’s mother. Catherine O’Hara is also among the returnees, while Justin Theroux is a newcomer to the proceedings” (Kit, 2023). So fans can not only expect to see the return of Winona, but also Catherine O’Hara and Michael Keaton presumably playing their original characters in the Beetlejuice story. And of course you cannot overlook the scream-queen Jenna Ortega, who is continuing to build her horror brand by making an appearance as the rumored daughter to Winona’s character.
With several other big name drops including William Dafoe, Johnny Depp, and Monica Bellucci, Beetlejuice 2 is making up a stellar cast with a mix of both classic and new faces to the original story. This gives hope that the film will authentically and seamlessly blend elements of modern film, with the classic moments we love from the first Beetlejuice movie.
Set at a September 6th release date for 2024, there is still plenty of time for new stills, costumes, and videos to be revealed. But these initial images are a great sense of comeback to the fans who grew to love Winona as Lydia, and the Beetlejuice story as a whole.
